Mesoscale productivity fronts and local fishing opportunities in the European Seas

چکیده
This study evaluates the relationship between both commercial and scientific spatial fisheries data a new satellite-based estimate of potential fish production (Ocean Productivity available to Fish, OPFish) in European Seas. To construct OPFish, we used productivity frontal features derived from chlorophyll-a horizontal gradients, which characterize 10%–20% global phytoplankton that effectively fuels higher trophic levels. OPFish is relatively consistent with distribution pelagic demersal landings catches per unit effort (LPUEs CPUEs, respectively). An index harvest relative ocean (HP index) calculated by dividing these LPUEs or CPUEs OPFish. The HP reflects intensity fishing gear type regard local production. Low levels indicate lower than expected oceanic production, suggesting over-exploitation, while high imply more sustainable fishing. allows comparing production-dependent suitability intensities. Our results bottom trawl highlight over-exploitation species shelves twice as Mediterranean Sea North-East Atlantic. dominant gears suggests midwater otter trawls are associated lowest highest overfishing, respectively. contrasts at scales captured suggest accounting for can promote sustainability context ecosystem-based management required international marine policies.

The world's oceans are governed as a system of over 150 sovereign exclusive economic zones (EEZs, ∼42% of the ocean) and one large high seas (HS) commons (∼58% of ocean) with essentially open access. Many high-valued fish species such as tuna, billfish, and shark migrate around these large oceanic regions, which as a consequence of competition across EEZs and a global race-to-fish on the HS, ha...

Fishing Is one of the few activities left in which people harvest what they have not sown an anachronistic leftover from the times of hunters-gatherers. The transition from hunting and gathering to farming on land took place several thousand years .a90 in most cultures; with fisheries this transition is only now beginning to take place on a large scale, and may be completed only well into the n...

The European Union lacks a comprehensive framework to address the threats posed by the introduction and spread of marine non-indigenous species (NIS). Current efforts are fragmented and suffer substantial gaps in coverage. In this paper we identify and discuss issues relating to the assessment of spatial and temporal patterns of introductions in European Seas (ES), based on a scientifically val...
